Surface treatment

PTFE that will not bond, PEEK where print rubs off, catheters that need different surface behaviour — three processes that change the surface only , not the material. None of them uses chemical reagents.

PTFE etching · secondary etching

PTFE Etched & Secondary Etched

The PTFE liner is central to catheter construction, yet PTFE resists laminating and bonding to other polymers — which raises processing difficulty and narrows where it can be used. Etching and secondary etching solve that.

AdhesionBetter than conventional chemical etching
Effect holdsUp to 12 months

PEEK Printing Pre-Treatment

PEEK Printing Pre-Treatment

Raises surface adhesion on PEEK tubing so print quality improves — graduations and markings stop rubbing off, with no change of material.

Laser Conformal

Medical Catheter Laser Conformal

A focused, high-energy laser beam is applied to the surface, conformally removing or adding surface material and so changing its micro and macro behaviour.

EffectConformal removal or addition of surface material

If stock liners are past their etch windowPTFE liners etched over a year ago can be re-treated to recover adhesion.
If reagents are hard to bring on siteAll three are chemical-free, so there is no residue to manage.
If volumes are highEtching runs in batches and laser conformal scales to mass production.
If the material is unusualLaser conformal conditions are designed around your material.

Frequently asked

FAQ

Why will nothing bond to PTFE?

PTFE has very low surface energy, so adhesives and other polymers will not hold. Etching activates the surface so bonding and lamination become possible.

How does this differ from chemical etching?

No chemical reagents are used, so there is no residue to manage — and adhesion comes out better than with conventional chemical etching.

How long does the etch last?

Up to 12 months. After that, secondary etching restores adhesion.

What does PEEK pre-treatment change?

It raises surface adhesion so ink holds harder — graduations and markings stop rubbing off without changing material.

What can laser conformal do?

It removes or adds surface material conformally, changing micro and macro surface behaviour. Conditions are designed per material.

Can you treat tubing we send in?

Yes. Send specification, quantity and requirements and we set the process conditions and reply.
